The Gazette has reported that a woman driving her car was hit by a truck that ran a red light Sunday evening. The accident occurred at the intersection of Woodmen Road and Powers Boulevard. The woman “was broadsided by a truck going west on Woodmen.” She remains hospitalized and the driver of the truck was cited for his offense.
The extent of the woman’s injuries are unknown at this time and hopefully are not serious. Serious injuries and even death, unfortunately, are all too often the result of car accidents like the one mentioned in this report. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 42,031 people died in motor vehicle traffic deaths in 2006. That translates to around 115 deaths in motor vehicle accidents every day.
Like the driver who ran the red light in the accident reported above, drivers who cause accidents are held responsible by the law for their part in an accident. If you or someone you know has caused an accident and have been charged by police, you need a qualified and knowledgeable Colorado Criminal Defense Attorney to help you understand all your legal options. According to The Gazette, Colorado Springs Police have arrested 4 teens suspected of involvement “in a string of vehicle break-ins early Monday morning in east-central Colorado Springs.” Each of the teens, 3 juveniles and an 18-year-old, faces at least one “first degree criminal trespass” charge, which is considered a felony. Police were aided by a neighbor who witnessed a group of men breaking into a vehicle around 4 am. The crimes are still being investigated but it is believed that at least 3 cars were burglarized.
Charges of theft, including criminal trespass, as well as any other charge of stealing another person’s property require the experience of a qualified and reputable Criminal Defense Attorney. The right attorney can help make sure your case is handled fairly and that your rights are protected. In some cases, theft charges can escalate to criminal charges unfairly and a good attorney can help determine if your case should be tried as a civil case rather than a criminal one. In most situations, victims are willing to negotiate and a case can be resolved through restitution.
A skillful Colorado Springs Criminal Defense Attorney can work with prosecutors to strike a favorable plea bargain to help you avoid unnecessary jail time. If you or someone you know has been charged with theft or burglary in Colorado Springs or El Paso County, contact a qualified Colorado Springs Criminal Defense Attorney immediately at the Law Office of Sarah Christensen. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Colorado police will again be targeting boaters who drive under the influence of alcohol this weekend. State marine officers will be combing the Colorado lakes, from Friday through Sunday, looking for boaters who have had too much to drink. Operation Dry Water, as it is known to police officials, is an effort to keep Colorado lakes safe for all boaters and water enthusiasts. Fatal recreational boating accidents in Colorado are largely due to boating under the influence of alcohol and state officials want to stop them. Last year, Operation Dry Water accounted for 167 warnings, 31 citations and 1 arrest in the State of Colorado last year.
The U.S. Coast Guard states that Boating Under the Influence (BUI) is the leading cause of fatal boating accidents throughout the United States, with 17% of all boating fatalities directly related to drug and alcohol abuse. (source)

A Colordao rafting guide was arrested for jumping in and saving a girl who had fallen out of his boat. Clear Creek sheriff’s deputes arrested Ryan Snodgrass for obstructing government operations, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette. The victim, a 13 year old girl, was reported missing after the raft flipped in the water. After 30-45 minutes, Snodgrass finally spotted the young girl, nearly a half mile from where the raft initially flipped. Even though the county’s search and rescue team told him not to, Snodgrass jumped into the water to rescue her. He swam to the frightened girl and stayed with her until the country rescue team was able to reach them. Snodgrass was immediately arrested for obstructing government operations.
In general, offenses against government operations include resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, false reporting, bribery and tampering with witness or juries (source). Other offenses can include such things are eavesdropping, abuse of a public office or perjury. In this situation, someone may be charged with obstructing government operations if they knowingly obstruct or impair the administration of medical or emergency assistance by an emergency services worker. Obviously, preventing someone from administering lifesaving CPR to a drowning victim is markedly different than rescuing a drowning victim against police advice.
