According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Colorado police will again be targeting boaters who drive under the influence of alcohol this weekend. State marine officers will be combing the Colorado lakes, from Friday through Sunday, looking for boaters who have had too much to drink. Operation Dry Water, as it is known to police officials, is an effort to keep Colorado lakes safe for all boaters and water enthusiasts. Fatal recreational boating accidents in Colorado are largely due to boating under the influence of alcohol and state officials want to stop them. Last year, Operation Dry Water accounted for 167 warnings, 31 citations and 1 arrest in the State of Colorado last year.
The U.S. Coast Guard states that Boating Under the Influence (BUI) is the leading cause of fatal boating accidents throughout the United States, with 17% of all boating fatalities directly related to drug and alcohol abuse. (source)
