The Gazette reports that Colorado Springs criminal defense attorney Sarah Christensen has secured a “not guilty” verdict on charges of murder and kidnapping against a client who she believes was over-charged. Her client was accused of murder, accessory to murder and kidnapping in the death of a man in Colorado Springs in July, but Ms. Christensen believes, and jurors agreed, that there was reason to doubt that he was guilty of murder and kidnapping. In a case that began with a drug deal gone wrong, two men tried to return to a drug dealer who they believed had cheated them, and the man who was to lead them to the drug dealer ended up shot and killed. In her closing argument, Ms. Christensen said that her client was “shocked” that the man with him opened fire, and was extremely sorry about what happened. She said that he needed to be held accountable as an accessory for his part in the death, but that he was not guilty of kidnapping or of murder. After five hours deliberation, the jury unanimously agreed. While her client will have to serve time for the accessory charge, he has been spared the life sentence that the excessive charges would have carried.

Are you facing criminal charges or a criminal investigation? Speak with a dedicated Colorado Springs criminal defense attorney immediately to protect your rights.

The United States criminal justice system is designed so that people accused of crimes get the best chance possible to clear their names of wrongdoing. The system is complicated, and everyone involved in it has an interest in justice, but also in seeing their own viewpoint win out. People charged with crimes have rights, but the average person probably doesn’t know how to protect those rights. A dedicated, experienced criminal defense attorney can ensure that your rights are secure as you speak with police while they investigate a crime, as well as prosecutors if you have been charged with a crime. In many cases, a criminal defense attorney can show that there is too little evidence for a trial, or that evidence was obtained in violation of your rights. In these cases, charges may be dismissed without a trial. From police investigation straight through to sentencing after a trial, an dedicated attorney can protect her client throughout.

Two other passengers reportedly ran away after the crash before police officials arrived on scene. The driver is being held at the county’s juvenile detention center with charges of vehicular assault pending further investigation.

According to the Gazette, a man is being sought by the Colorado Springs police for robbing a Game Stop store on Space Center Drive. At about 9:00, a man who appeared to be in his twenties entered the store, pulled out a gun, and demanded money from the store’s employee. He then fled with the money. No one was injured during the robbery.

Have you been charged with a crime? Speak with an aggressive, dedicated Colorado Springs criminal defense attorney today to discuss your options.

The Gazette is unable to report many details about the robber, so we don’t know very much about him, which points to one of the primary reasons for the presumption of innocence that all people charged with crimes in America are Constitutionally guaranteed. Particularly in a case such as this, where the person who committed the crime fled the scene, it is important to remember that the police may make a mistake and arrest the wrong person. No matter how hard the police work to protect us, it is a fact that people are sometimes charged with crimes that they did not commit. This is part of why hiring an experienced, dedicated Colorado Springs criminal defense attorney is so important if you have been charged with a crime. An experienced attorney knows how to work with the facts of the case to show that you may not have been the person who committed the crime, that the police may have made an honest mistake in your case. In a case such as this one, in which the charge may be much more serious because of the use of a gun, the value of a good attorney can not be underestimated.

If you have been charged with any crime in Colorado, or if you believe that you are going to be charged, it is imperative that you speak with an attorney, before you give any statement to the police. A qualified Colorado Springs criminal defense attorney will ensure that your rights are protected, and can guide you through the justice system. Sarah Christensen has helped numerous people navigate the justice system after being charged with crimes. She will work to have your charges dismissed, and if your case does go to trial she will fight for an acquittal, or the least severe sentence she can get for you.

The Gazette is reporting on a murder trial in which the public defender representing the defendant has requested a mistrial after testimony by a witness for the prosecution that the defense attorney believes may prejudice the jury. Bertha Melo had formerly been named as a co-defendant in the trial of Ricardo Chalchi-Sevilla, who is accused of first degree murder. In exchange for testimony, she accepted a plea of second degree murder. The judge has ruled that an instruction to the jury to disregard a comment in Ms. Melo’s testimony will be sufficient to maintain the fairness of the trial but the defense attorney believes that the jury may not be able to disregard the comment in question. An argument has arisen between prosecution and defense regarding the reliability of Ms. Melo’s testimony.

While facing trial for criminal offenses, particularly serious felonies such as first degree murder, it is of the utmost importance to have an attorney who you trust to defend you zealously, a right that you are guaranteed by law. When you have been accused of a crime, the right criminal defense attorney can make all the difference in the outcome. Of course, the individual facts of your case will weigh heavily on the outcome, but a reliable, experienced Colorado Springs criminal defense attorney may be able to get charges dismissed. If the case goes to trial, an quality criminal defense lawyer may be the difference between an acquittal and a conviction, or in case of conviction between a harsh penalty and a less severe one.

Theft, burglary, illegal weapons, and aggravated assault are the charges being racked up for two minors and a 20 year old after a violent home invasion on October 28th. According to The Denver Post, the suspects were arrested on Wednesday after being accused of entering a Colorado Springs home and attempting to steal several guns that were kept within the residence. Two victims were home at the time of the robbery and were assaulted by the three suspects now in police custody. The victims suffered severe injures and head trauma due to being attacked and beaten with suspects guns. Both victims were taken to the hospital, one has been released and the other is still in critical condition. The incident is still being investigated by the police and some of the weapons are being held as evidence.

Breaking into a residence and assaulting another person or even having the intent to assault someone, would be considered first degree burglary. There are different levels of intensity when dealing with robbery such as first, second and third degree burglary. Understanding the differences between these classifications can be difficult. Seeking a criminal defense attorney who understands the law and your rights can potentially help in avoiding any unnecessary jail time.

An attempted theft can be a very serious offense in Colorado Springs. Theft can include shoplifting, identity theft, credit card fraud and any other means of stealing someone’s personal property. According to The Denver Post, The Colorado Springs Police Department is on the hunt for a woman who attempted to rob a local convenient store. The Conoco convenience store located at 4310 E. Fountain Blvd experienced a dangerous robbery attempt late Tuesday night. A woman went up to the register clerk and demanded money from the cash register claiming she had a gun. The attempt fell through when the suspect fled the scene and drove off in a dark four-door sedan. It is unclear what scared the suspect from the crime. The woman, thought to be in her mid 40s, was last seen in a black jacket and blue hat. Her intended direction was undetermined. No one was hurt in this incident but given slightly different circumstances the outcome could have been much more damaging.

The difference between misdemeanor theft charges and felony theft charges can be difficult to decipher. Finding the right attorney can help you determine if your case should be considered a misdemeanor case or a felony one. Possessing a weapon with the intent to commit a crime could be considered a felony even if no one was hurt. Having a dedicated defense attorney on your side could help avoid unnecessary jail time.

Geremiah Vargas and Marshall Hamilton-Parks were stabbed due to what the victims believe was the result of a hate crime. Vargas and Hamilton-Parks are two homeless, homosexual men that live in the Colorado Springs area. According to the men, their attackers Randy Bishop and Cornelius Bates were yelling derogatory terms toward the men at the time of the incident. The Colorado Gazette states that while Bishop and Bates will not be charged with a hate crime, they will be charged with the attack on the men.

The Colorado law states that a hate crime is any felony committed against any person based on their skin color, religious beliefs, disabilities, sexual orientation etc… Recently, a bill was introduced into the Senate that would allow crimes against the homeless to be considered as a hate crime. Proponents of the bill suggest that this clause may inhibit people from being able to cause harm to those based off of their socio-economic status. The bill is still pending in the House and no further action has taken place in the court system at this time.
